Presidential Election 2015: As the dust settles… [Part One]

GEJ: Honour in Defeat

Jonathan GoodluckI worked as an INEC adhoc staff in 2011 election, I make bold to say that for me it is still the freest election that has taken place in Nigeria.

While the victory in this election might have been resounding for All Progessive Congress [APC] and General Buhari in this presidential election, as Nigerians expressed their feelings through democratic process.

Let us  quickly differentiate  between this election and  that of 2011 as the circumstance around them dictates.

In 2011, President  Jonathan represented a lot of positive things: A young president, with an impressive academic CV, from a largely under-represented region. Also, his meteoric rise in political life is too phenomenal not be seen as an ideal candidate. You can say he has the Halo effect and the stage was perfectly set for him to be elected as the president of the 7th republic after two years as a vice president  and 2 years as an acting president. In my opinion, to stage a rightful claim to the office of the president of Nigeria, anything short of free and fair election will give create tension.

Fast forward to 2015, President Jonathan has been distant from the qualities and potentials seen in him 6-7 years ago. Surrounded by sycophants who make him suffer delusion of grandeur suggesting he is a messiah, ferrying cash on private Jets to purchase arms, Mismanagement of state resources on a grand scale without culpability, inexplicable mis-handling of the state of insecurity, misguided and reckless utterances of the President and unacceptable public abuse of unrecognized power by the first lady (especially in Rivers state) and many acts unworthy of recounting. While some of these have not been directly tied to President Jonathan, the fact that he surrounds himself with unscrupulous characters speaks volume of his incompetence to square up to forces behind the scene  working against the prosperity of Nigeria as a nation.

The election earlier slated for 14th of February was delayed by 6 weeks to wrestle back the controlled areas from Boko Haram that have been abandoned before now in search of sophisticated weapons to combat them. I personally find this excuse flimsy and I choose to believe this is due to the handwritings on the wall that the election will not return him to the office on 29th of May if it goes as initially slated.

Attempts to salvage the election eventually proved abortive. Thank God it was largely violence free, but it was not without theatrics that could have caused ripples.

President Jonathan congratulated General Buhari  even before INEC announced the winner with just Borno state only to be announced and it was mathematically impossible to stage a comeback. The show of sportsmanship  has been praised both  locally and internationally but it is not enough to say the president has a large heart but his ability at the moment in time to put Nigeria ahead of any personal gain or advantage even before his sycophants starts drumming up beats of discord and tunes that can heat up the polity of Nigeria.

With that done, I make bold to say the most (and probably the only) enduring legacy that will be left by GEJ is the conduct of a free and fair election in his own right not once but twice and the humility to know when to concede. This is will be foreign to a lot of African leaders and in annals of history, this is a moment of grace could actually mitigate the degree of incompetence that has characterized his tenure. I hope this set the standard not just for Nigeria leaders but African leaders that it is a call to service, when the people look the other way you could still hold your head high.

No ambition is worth the blood of any Nigerian – President Goodluck Jonathan said this and he stood by it.

All Progressive Congress: Finally an institutionalized Party

apc_partyThe party of the moment is APC with or without victory in the presidential election the party has redefined what opposition is in Nigeria and broke the hegemony of Peoples Democratic Party for close to two decades.

Although the being of the party is largely owed to steady and organic growth of All Progressive Congress in the southwest, and decision of  CPC and ACN to agree on the primary objective to break the PDP hegemony. This has helped institutionalized a strong opposition.

However the popularity too benefit a lot from the failings of President Goodluck Jonathan and implosion of PDP. With Nigerians tired of ineptitude in rule, undisguised corruption, and unbridled abuse of power, the bar for a failing government in Nigeria was set at an all-time low since the start of the fourth republic.

It was going to be now or never for any opposition. I have mentioned in my previous discourse that the survival of APC will largely depend or their victory at the presidential polls. If that was not the case, the party would probably have returned back to its regional domination and never attain the nationalist status as even the party faithful do not believe the cross country support could stand the test of time if it fails to secure the presidency against a very weak government.

#OnMonday: Living the Dream (Dream pt. 1)

SegunOnMonday: Living the Dream (Dream pt. 1)

Are you familiar with the popular saying that if your dream doesn’t scare you, it is not big enough? If you’re, good! If you’re not, you’ve not missed much!!

No matter the size of your dream, there will always be a drift, slight or huge between the dream and realisation. Before you ask me why, forces like: your potential, environment, background, emerging opportunities/challenges will always make the difference.

If success date is an appointment you can put on diary, everyone will do nothing except stay glued to the calendar for the date to come.

Your dream will almost certainly be the cornerstone of your success but be careful not to throw it out of the window in the face of unplanned forces.

I will try to translate this adage in my native:
“Planning to build an edifice like none ever seen is a tip of vanity”
If can’t manage your dream when you’re small, you will not do better when you’re big.

If your dream is to impact positively on people’s lives, don’t wait till you have millions, accommodate that dream in your day to day.

That is what I call living the dream!!!

#OnMonday: Enthusiasm

SegunOnMonday: Enthusiasm
Some people say been enthusiastic is a reserve feature for few, I disagree. Enthusiasm is a feature that is inherent in all of us.

Try to remember the feeling of trying a new thing you’ve always craved for.

But I think the chief of the problem is, we don’t connect the little deeds we do, with the environment and the fact that there’s is always a slice of luck in play too.

If you believe your little can make a change, then you’ve caused the change half way.

Steve Maraboli is his book: Life, the Truth and Being Free said:

“Protect your enthusiasm from the negativity and fear of others. Never decide to do nothing just because you can only do little. Do what you can. You would be surprised at what “little” acts have done for our world.”

Be positive

Good morning

LIFE IN TEST

#SegunOnMonday:

Life presents itself as a test: Under prepare and failure looms. Over prepare will mean you’re scared and you will fail anyway;

How do you know the quantum of preparation you need? It is not more than your best effort!

The stage where you feel you have worked hard in measure of your strength.

– Do what needs urgent attention now
– Don’t waste your effort on what is irrelevant
– Make sure you enjoy it
– Keep your confidence level by assuring yourself that you’ve put in a great deal of effort.
– Don’t be drawn by other voices other than yourself
– When you are not sure, don’t stop move on anyway!

REGRESSION: THE TURNING POINT

By: Afuye Akinyemi

This piece is dedicated to my friend Blackson Temitope-Usman who encouraged me to write on this controversial issue. Moral decline (or regression) refers to the process of declining from a higher to a lower level of morality. The condition of moral decline is seen as preceding or concomitant with the decline in quality of life, as well as the decline of nations. In the words of British lawyer and jurist Judge Devlin (1905 -1992),

“an established morality is as necessary as good government to the welfare of society. Societies disintegrate from within more frequently than they are broken up by external pressures.”

In order for morality to be upheld and for regression to be effectively measured, standards must exist as points of moral reference. While legal philosophy may hold that immorality is whatever a moral person considers immoral, these judgments are typically based on or are derived from either transcendent religious sources or established secular ideology. On a corporate scale, all governments and their legal and educational institutions operate out some basic moral beliefs, making complete separation of State from moral ideology impossible. In America, it was widely held that, in the words of Theodore Roosevelt: “To educate a man in mind and not in morals is to educate a menace to society”, with the morality referred to being foundationally that of the Bible. In the realm of formal religion, moral codes are passed on via sacred scriptures and traditions, which usually transcend time. However, cultural adaptations may be made as needed, while upholding the principal of the original. This adaptation is an area of theology. According to the New Testament, conscience and creation reveal essential moral truth, with the Holy Scriptures being the more comprehensive revelation, and the objective and immutable authority by which the truthfulness of any light of conscience is determined. While all major formal religions usually possess many basic moral commonalities, they can critically differ in some areas, including their manner or degree of cultural adaptation, such as are seen in the contrasts between the Bible and the Qur’an. Under secularism, religiously based laws may be upheld without requiring formal assent to one formal religion, as was the case in most of the history of the Nigeria. However, as changes in spiritual demographics occur, one ideological basis may be exchanged for another, such as is seen in atheistic humanism increasingly becoming the basis for morality in Nigeria, and essentially being State-sponsored, and supplanting that which was more Bible/Qur’an -based as presently seen in the nefarious activities of the boko haram sect. In the ideology of secular humanism, which the most prominent Western form of secularism advances, moral values are highly subject to change, being based upon the presumed superior reasoning of man, who is set forth as the supreme law-giver. Being basically atheistic, it operates out of a materialistic foundation, and lacking an objective, transcendent moral authority and its moral absolutes, it offers no assurance of moral stability, and is prone to extremes of moral relativism. How materialism assesses morality can be describe in ordinary parlance as:

Modern science directly implies that the world is organized strictly in accordance with mechanistic principles. There are no purposive principles whatsoever in nature. There are no gods and no designing forces that are rationally detectable. Second, modern science directly implies that there are no inherent moral or ethical laws, no absolute guiding principles for human society. Thirdly, human beings are marvellously complex machines. The individual human becomes an ethical person by means of two primary mechanisms: heredity and environmental influences. That is all there is. Fourth, we must conclude that when we die, we die and that is the end of us.

BIBLICAL THEOLOGY

The cause of moral regression continues be a subject of study. In the Bible, moral decline was always a result of spiritual declension, that of falling into idolatry (the worship of false gods), which is evidenced in the Bible to be the mother of all sins. In addition to the transitory and finite nature of such created gods, these are seen to be forbidden due to their being the product of man’s corrupt nature. Man also tends to become more like the object of his highest devotion and allegiance. God, who is stated to need nothing, and being omnipotent, omniscient and perfect, is seen to command man to worship Him as a matter of righteousness, and for the good of man. Certain environmental conditions are also seen as being conducive to idolatry and its spiritual and moral decline, these conditions most primarily being that of an abundance of sensual and material satisfaction, as well as ego fulfilment (pleasures, possessions and power). The Bible states that these created things are what the world “lusts” after, and exhorts all and sundry to set their controlling affection upon God and holy things. In early Nigeria, the tendency to drift away from faith in times of prosperity was observed early by the late sage Chief Obafemi Awolowo (1909-1987) who stated, “Religion begat prosperity, and the daughter devoured the mother”.

SECULAR IDEOLOGY

Moral decline begins when transcendent moral values, which have proven to be beneficial over time, are discarded in preference to various ideas which man finds more conducive to achieving ultimately destructive lustful desires. While people without religion may sometimes be considered relatively good, and contrasted with evil people, yet, in contrast to the Bible, atheism offers no objective transcendent authority which comprehensively defines good and evil, and which is proven to provide beneficial morality. In addition, the moral foundation of atheism is seen by many as having allowed atheists to easily justify their atrocities, these being pragmatically reasonable to them. The corresponding responses from atheists, such as which invoke Hitler as an example of a Christian, and/or charge God with immorality (paradoxically, by Biblical standards), is part of a renewed conflict.

Ease?

Segun on Monday – 8th October

“Never throughout history has a man who lived a life of ease left a name worth remembering”

Those were not my words but that of Theodore Roosevelt

The Moral of this is that you’re not to pamper yourself as your sensitivity to success will be untested when success comes begging.

You will be well insulated in your ease which only serves the short term.

Be worried if you’re not break a sweat in whatever you do.

Road to success is bumpy and full of patches.

Man up!!!

Aisha Buhari and The Cartier Affair

Aisha Buhari
Wife of the President of Nigeria

The news have been making the rounds about the wrist watch worn by the first lady at the Swearing-in ceremony of the president of Nigeria – Muhammadu Buhari.

Many have tagged the piece of jewel as extravagant and a demonstration of ostentatious lifestyle of the Wife of the president and the president’s family. To them, this is a clear misinformation from the ‘common and poor president’ they voted into office.

However, there have been claims and counterclaim about the value of the Cartier Baignoire Folle 18-Carat White Gold Diamond Watch that was donned by the first lady. In the interest of responsible journalism, I will try to establish the true value of the wrist watch. I first read about the wristwatch on Jide-salu.com which confirmed that the value of the wristwatch is £34,500. However, on Tuesday several websites claimed the wristwatch is merely $129. If you ask me, there is a huge gulf between the two.

From my own findings (Thank God we can all find and buy whatever we want on the internet), This Cartier Wristwatch is sold by some jewelers as high as $50,500.00 (N11,110,000 approx.). The watch gallery also listed the watch for £34,500 (N10, 500,000)cartierawiss cartier

However, those claiming the watch go for a paltry $129 must have got there information on kowatches.co. Well, Kowatches is a leading seller of replica jewelries. If you can not afford the real deal, settle for the cheap deal.cartierko relica information on the website

Any one that intends to buy a rhodiumized 18K white gold watch  with brilliant-cut diamonds, and transparent sapphire crystal back at N23,000 ($129) must be living in fantasy.

I do not think there is a question about the value of the watch but my bone of contention which I know I will get sticks for is – Yes, she’s wearing a N10.5Million wristwatch on her husband’s most important day and so what?

I think the choice and taste of jewelries has nothing to do with the pro masses sentiment. In as much as there is no allegation that the acquisition of such is through corruption or mismanagement of public funds. If you work hard, and you treat yourself to something good it has no bearing on your sentiment for the public.

Aisha Buhari is not the president of Nigeria and we did not vote her. As long as it is not public wealth that is used in an unscrupulous way. There is nothing wrong.

My Dear Sisters,

It has been 365 days of mystery, repugnance, ineptitude and irresponsibility. We betrayed you as Nigerians-We shouted for a while and stopped; some doubted that you were kidnapped but what is more disappointing is that we can not offer any excuse other than greed, politics and incompetence on why your whereabouts are still unknown.

It is unfortunate that we have not been able to offer your parents closure as days fade away staring into desolate nights and gloomy days. Though I do not know anyone of you in person but you are my sisters and fellow compatriots. I feel awful that we are not at any point close resolution.

I still wonder where could you be. Why is it this difficult to just point in a direction? I am sure you have a million and one questions on why our leaders have failed you for so long but we are astoundingly dulled to a state of stupefaction inspite of the fact that the whole world did what they could to support those at the helms of affairs to bring you back in earnest from the claws of savages and primitive captors.
We will keep you in our hearts and we will keep hope and faith until the light guides you home from the agonizing trepidation and unending darkness. ….and this time we won’t lose you again.
Just remember the victory of evil over good shall only be TEMPORAL.
Stay alive because we never mourned you – We never will!
Your Helpless Brother,

#onMonday: Opportunity hides in plain sight
Whether you deserve an opportunity is not a function of what you’ve done in the past alone.  A great deal of it rest on what it is expected of you to do the with the opportunity.

In essence,  you should keep an ambition robust enough to furnish the opportunity should it present itself.

If you don’t have a plan on how to spend $200 you will never know it is an opportunity should someone gives you the something of the worth or more.

Like the popular saying: opportunity dances with only those it meets on the floor ready to dance.

Be wise!
Be ambitious!!
Be successful!!!

#onMonday: Choices and Consequences

Many things go hand in hand in life. Two of those are choices and consequences.

While we have reasonable control over the choices we make, little do we have over the results of it.

In the end, Choices we make explain a lot about our character;  the result shows our personality

Make decisions based on what you best think of a situation in assumption that it is the best you can do  to get the best of result and hope for the best.

Let your decision be driven by positivity!

#onMonday: Winning is half measure, domination is the full measure

If you ask Vince Lombardi about winning.  I am sure he has written a whole lot about it. He even wrote about the discipline of Winning.

As near perfect as winning and the completion of it might seem. It is not enough.  Winning is not success, although series of winning culminate into it. Winning is what I call half measure. But to succeed, there shouldn’t be half measure.

You go for full measure and that’s domination. How do you dominate?
Easy, always make your new winning the least acceptable winning.  That way you remain the pace setter.

Remember: Winning is half measure, domination is the full measure

Keep winning to dominate.

Good morning

Oi! is 3rd of January again

Yea, it is 3rd day of the new year

that Capricorn boy again?

that’s him coming!

How Old is he now?

He’s had a big chunk of his 3rd decade

is it all about days?

not much of the numbers and dates but more of how much change he’s witnessed

Oi! can we join the birthday party train?

Sorry, not so fussy about merriment today

days fading fast beget apprehension

whatever that means buddy

this can be just another gregorian day as for all,

for me it sets a mirror before me

and all I am beset with are questions to answer:

pout to calm;

knots to losen;

angst to erase;

surfaces to delayer.

Oi! I am at sea at your words

That is the essence of a searching mind

more questions sets you on the path of fulfillment

fulfillment brings forth success in my red book

If you wanna join the party, don’t just do it today

visit your red-book as mine

and assess why you are important to change

This message is a reflection of what was going through my mind at the striking hour of 00.01 on 3rd January 2014.

This is a 3 way conversation of the questioner, the by-person and me.

I tried to use them to draw pointers to my assumed essence which is positive change as a mark of my birthday.

#ONMONDAY: Slow but Steady

Whatever your endeavour is, always be original.
Be yourself! If you think you’re slow, it is because you compare your potentials with that of another.

We are all unique in our capabilities. He did it quickly is different from he does it better.

The more you get drawn into direct comparison there’s always a chance you’re going to come short.

Don’t mind an early starter, you can pick up on what they miss while rushing.

Toll your path and may be you will do it better because you use your hindsight while they don’t.

Keep winning.

#onMonday: potential vs willpower

Potential is tool for success but no guarantee of success in itself.

Every man virtually has it in him/her. The will to unlock it is the key to its realisation.

Many fall in the face of challenges because they overwhelmed themselves by telling themselves they’re not ready nor have what it takes.

What it takes is getting off your back side and question your will-power.

Remember:
The problem is not as much of whether you have the potential to do big things but whether you can ask of your self the big question and convincingly answer sure I can!

Good morning

#OnMonday:
Life is all about hustle! That’s a rife word in the world today. Do what you can and care less whose Ox is gored.

When you are rooting for the top, you can do anything, but in the end we all do it to search for inner peace.

What is the point of attaining this state and the reason for which you seek it has been defeated.

To maintain your virtue, one needs courage.
And for courage,
“One isn’t necessarily born with courage, but one is born with potential. Without courage, we cannot practice any other virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.”

This is by far the most tested feature of a man.
